The 5th China Electric Arc Furnace Steelmaking Scientific Development Forum, hosted by the Chinese Society for Metals, the Jiangsu Provincial Society for Metals, and Nanjing Iron & Steel Group Co., Ltd., was held in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, from September 11th to 13th, 2024. The forum, themed "Low-Cost Electric Arc Furnace Steelmaking: Achieving a Greener Future," invited industry experts to interpret national policies, discuss the latest advancements in low-cost electric arc furnace (EAF) smelting technology, scrap steel application technologies, and major energy and environmental issues. It also facilitated exchanges on the technical specifications of different furnace types. The EAF Steelmaking Standardization Working Group of the Chinese Society for Metals and the EAF Steelmaking Production Technology Service Platform continuously promote the upgrading of EAF steelmaking equipment, R&D innovation, process optimization, energy consumption and emissions reduction, and material utilization improvement. This is necessary for the development of the steel industry itself and an inevitable choice in the global trend of sustainable development.

The "3rd National Electric Arc Furnace Steelmaking Plant Managers' Symposium" was held concurrently with the forum. Representatives from EAF steelmaking production enterprises exchanged views and discussed EAF steelmaking costs and key technical indicators, EAF production cost optimization, scrap steel utilization technologies, and the future development path of EAF steelmaking. This electric arc furnace (EAF) forum attracted over 340 experts and representatives from 115 companies across China. 85 EAF plant managers provided materials for production technology exchange, and 28 technical presentations were given. Representatives from leading steel companies such as China Baowu Steel Group, Nanjing Iron & Steel Group, Shagang Group, Zhangxuan Technology, Sichuan Metallurgical Control Group, Fujian Jinshenglan Group, Guangxi Guixin Group, Jiangsu Feida Group, Xuzhou Jinhong Group, Shougang Group, Benxi Steel Plates, and Hebei Iron & Steel Group Shijiazhuang Iron & Steel Group highlighted their companies' recent work on the current status and development trends of EAF steelmaking both domestically and internationally, as well as new technologies. They also offered directional suggestions and discussed topics including achieving zero-carbon smelting technology in EAFs, the characteristics of mainstream global EAF technologies and their current development in the Chinese market, ultra-low emissions and environmental protection technologies in EAF steelmaking, and the future development direction of EAF steelmaking technology in the carbon-neutral era.

The opening ceremony was chaired by Jiang Xi, Chief Engineer and Director of the New Technology Department of the Chinese Society for Metals.

Lin Lefu, First-level Investigator of the Raw Materials Industry Division of the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Industry and Information Technology; Li Zheng, Second-level Inspector of the Jiangsu Provincial Association for Science and Technology; Wang Xinjiang, Vice President and Secretary-General of the Chinese Society for Metals; Chen Jianhua, Executive Vice President of the Jiangsu Provincial Society for Metals and President of the Jiangsu Provincial Metallurgical Industry Association; and Chu Juefei, Vice President of Nanjing Iron & Steel Group, delivered speeches at the meeting.
